Why Scratching Is Good for Cats

Scratching is exercise, communication, scent marking and maintenance all at once. The goal is not to stop it, but to make the right place irresistible.
Offer choice and height
Many cats enjoy both vertical and horizontal scratching. A tall, stable surface lets them stretch fully, while a low board can suit relaxed daily scratching.
Place the scratcher near sleeping areas, doorways or existing scratch marks. These are the locations your cat has already chosen.
Reward the habit
Praise exploration, add catnip when appropriate and never punish scratching. Positive associations build a reliable routine much faster than correction.
